e-Pharmacy is also called as online pharmacy, internet pharmacy, or mail-order pharmacy. Here medicine sends to the customer through the mail or shipping companies as per the order. Nowadays e-Pharmacies have significantly risen because of e-commerce boom in India. The factors which support the e-Pharmacy system are easy availability of medicine through courier at the patient’s door and discounted prices of medicine. All India Organization of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) protest against the online sale of medicines due to the following drawbacks.
- Entry of low quality medication
- Availability of misbranded and spurious medicines
- Irrational use of drugs
- Drug addiction among youth because of easy availability of drugs
- Lack of infrastructure and manpower for good governance
As per the Drugs and Cosmetics (D&C) Act of 1940 and Rules 1945, the sale of medicines online in the domestic market is illegal and Rule 65 of D&C Act says that medicines should be dispense under the supervision of Pharmacist.
In advanced countries this online pharmacy system is available but they have necessary infrastructure and manpower for good governance to study the risk and threats. So Government and regulatory authorities should properly study the risk and treats of this system and take necessary action for the safety of patient.
